9 things you didn’t know about coffee

We wake up to it every morning. We consume way too much of it throughout the day, but what do we really know about coffee? Lets start at the beginning.


It began with dancing goats

A legend has it that the effects of caffeine were first noticed by Ethiopian shepherds after they noticed their goats going wild after they ate coffee berries.


Coffee was a snack before it was a drink

Coffee berries used to be mixed with fat to form little energy balls. We don’t think that’s a bad idea.


Coffee isn’t grown anywhere in the United States…

…except Hawaii. Hawaii grows coffee. Go Hawaii!


King Charles was not a fan

In 1675. King Charles outlawed coffee houses because he thought they were meeting places for people to conspire against him. Not paranoid at all, Charles…


George Washington invented instant coffee

No, not that George Washington. A Belgian man with the same name invented instant coffee in 1906.


There are two main types

There’s Robusta coffee, which is bitterer but has more caffeine, and there’s Arabica, which is more popular and milder. Are you a Robusta or Arabica fan?


Coffee grows on trees

Imagine having to climb 30 feet for your fix. That’s how tall these trees could potentially grow up to! Not to worry though, most of them stay around 10 feet tall to make our lives easier.


Espresso is not a type of coffee itself

Espresso is just the way the coffee is made. To make espresso, you shoot really hot, super pressurized water through finely ground beans. Also, it’s ESpresso not EXpresso.


World War II deserves credit for the phrase “cup of Joe”

Soldiers in WWII (aka G.I. Joes) were seen to be big coffee drinkers, so the phrase “cup of Joe” was born.


The term “Americano” also comes from WWII

America soldiers used to dilute their espresso with hot water to tame the strength of the drink. Now we have Café Americano.

Bagel Quiche

People don’t realize how versatile bagels are. You can bake them, toast them, fry them on a skillet or even make them into quiches. Yes, you read that correctly. We said quiches. It’s really simple to do too. Here’s how:


What you’ll need:


  • 1 Bagel Bakery bagel (plain or any flavor that would go with egg)
  • 2 to 3 large eggs
  • Yummy fillings (like cheese or veggies)


What to do:


  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees, and spray a piece of foil with nonstick spray.


  1. Slice the very bottom of the bagel off nice and evenly. You can set this piece aside to eat or use as a topping. Otherwise, just throw it away.


  1. Carefully hollow out the bread inside of the cut bagel using your fingers to pull the bread away from the crust of the bagel.


  1. Set the bagel, cut-side-up on the foil.


  1. Whisk 2 eggs and pour them into the hollowed out bagel.


  1. Place desired filling choices into the egg. If the egg and filling does not fill the bagel completely, you can add another whisked egg on top.


  1. Wrap the bagel up the sides with the foil, but keep the top open to the heat of the oven.


  1. Bake the bagel for 20 to 30 minutes, or until the egg is completely set (this will depend on the size of the bagel and how many eggs you used).


  1. Serve immediately.

Breakfast Pizza Bagels

You’ve heard of pizza bagels, but have you ever heard of breakfast pizza bagels? We didn’t think so. Just pop an egg in the middle of your pizza bagel to turn your pizza bagel into a breakfast dish. Here’s what you need:

  • 1 Bagel Bakery bagel (preferably plain, but other savory flavors will work)
  • 2 TBSP of pizza sauce
  • 2 OZ of mozzarella cheese
  • 2 eggs
  • Black pepper

*You can also add pepperoni and jalapeño, if desired.

Here’s what you do:

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees (F) while you place parchment paper or aluminum foil in a small baking dish.
  1. Slice bagel in half and spread one tablespoon of pizza sauce on each half.
  1. Top each half evenly with the cheese and add the toppings
  1. With caution, crack an egg into each hole.
  1. Top each egg with a little fresh ground black pepper.
  1. Bake for 16-20 minutes, depending on how you like your egg cooked. The longer it bakes, the less runny the yolk will be.


Now you can eat delicious pizza bagels for breakfast. Enjoy!

Baked Bagel French Toast

So you’re an avid bagel eater, but you’re getting a little tired of having the same old thing for breakfast every morning. Try throwing some Bagel Bakery bagels in the oven to make some baked bagel French toast. This recipe from Averie Cooks is great for Sunday morning brunch with your family or friends.


  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk or cream
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt, or taste
  • 5 Bagel Bakery cinnamon raisin bagels (or cinnamon-swirl, cinnamon-raisin, or plain bagels), diced in 1-inch pieces


  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Spray a medium-large oval baker with cooking spray or grease and flour the baking dish.
  1. Add butter in a large bowl, and microwave for one minute on high power to melt. Wait for a minute to let it cool.
  1. Combine the eggs, milk, maple syrup, sugars, vanilla, cinnamon, salt, and whisk into the bowl.
  1. Toss the bagels into the mixture and lightly coat them. Allow mixture to stand for about 5 to 10 minutes to give the bagels time to soak up the coating.
  1. Put the mixture out into the prepared baking dish, loosely laying it in. Drizzle any left over mixture over the bagels.
  1. Bake for about 35 minutes or until center is set. Make sure not to over bake the French toast so that it comes out soft and moist.

If you’re feeling a sweet tooth coming on, consider making a maple glaze to drizzle on top of the creation. For that you will need:

  • 1 cup confectioners’ sugar
  • 1/4 cup+ maple syrup
  1. In a medium bowl, add both ingredients and whisk until smooth. You may need to play with the sugar or maple syrup amounts slightly to achieve desired consistency.
  1. Remove French toast from oven, and evenly drizzle it with glaze
  1. Serve immediately!


Pumpkin Spice Cream Cheese

Fall is finally here! As sweater weather approaches, so does the pumpkin spice frenzy. In honor of the changing season, we bring you a recipe for pumpkin spice cream cheese that we found on Pinch My Salt. Slather this spread on some Bagel Bakery bagels and to start off the fall days.


What you’ll need:

  • Bagel Bakery bagels
  • 8 oz Philadelphia 1/3 fat cream cheese
  • 1/2 cup pureed pumpkin (canned is okay)
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp agave nectar or honey


Gather all the ingredients (minus the bagels) into a large mixing bowl and beat it until smooth. Then spread this delicious concoction on one of our bagels to start your morning off right!

Why go out to brunch when you can host your own personal breakfast party at home? Let us introduce to you the bagel bar, an idea thought up by the great people at 100 Layer Cakelet. This concept is super easy to create in your own home and share with your friends and family. A great thing about this idea is that most of what you need is already in your kitchen!

Here’s what you need:

  • Bagel Bakery Bagels
  • Colored Cream Cheese
  • Nutella
  • Sprinkles
  • Peanut Butter
  • Chocolate Chips
  • Strawberries
  • Blueberries
  • Party Napkins

Once you round up all these goodies all you have to do is let your creativity take over. Put any combination of the ingredients above on your Bagel Bakery bagel, and enjoy!

Celebrate with Bagels

If you have a birthday coming up or just throwing a back-to-school celebration, consider serving Bagel Bakery bagels and birthday cake cream cheese. You only need five ingredients to make this magical spread in your own home.


  • 1 (8 oz.) package cream cheese, at almost room temperature
  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoons almond extract
  • 2-3 Tablespoons rainbow sprinkles
  • Bagel Bakery bagels


  1. In a medium bowl, fold the cream cheese, powdered sugar, and almond extract together with a rubber spatula, until combined. Fold in rainbow sprinkles. Transfer to an airtight container and serve immediately or refrigerate for up to 3 days.
  2. Spread the cream cheese on a Bagel Bakery bagel and enjoy!

The key ingredient is the almond extract. It gives the spread the birthday cake taste without having to use actual cake mix. Another perk of this recipe it only takes two minutes!

From Bagels to Bagel Chips

Looking for an easy, delicious afternoon snack? Give bagel chips a try! Bagel chips are basically extra baked bagel pieces. You can eat them plain, or they go great with hummus, cheese or any other spread you desire. Here’s how you make these tasty treats in your own kitchen:

You will need:

  • 4-6 bagels
  • ¼ cup of olive oil
  • 2 cloves of garlic, smashed and peeled

Step 1: Head over to The Bagel Bakery and pick up some fresh bagels. We recommend getting plain bagels, but you can make these with any flavored bagel.

Step 2: Preheat oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step 3: With a knife, carefully cut the bagels into thin slices and spread on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Step 4: Heat oil in a saucepan. Once oil gets warm, remove from heat and add the garlic. Let sit for ten minutes and then remove the garlic from the oil.

Step 5: Using a pastry brush, brush the oil lightly on the bagel slices.

Step 6: Bake until golden brown. Turn and bake on the other side for 5 minutes.

Step 7: Remove from oven and let cool.

And voilà! Now you have a great afternoon snack to share with your friends and family.

Here at The Bagel Bakery, we want you to be as bagel-savvy as possible. This is why we’re sharing a few of our tips and tricks.

  • Avoid a trip to the hospital. Don’t cut a bagel while holding it in your hand! Instead, hold it down on a cutting board and carefully slice is horizontally. Better yet, invest in a bagel slicer if you can!
  • Freeze your bagels when they’re fresh. If you buy your bagels in bulk, you should freeze them as soon as possible to seal in their freshness.
  • Always pre-slice your bagels before freezing them. Trying so slice a frozen bagel is a guaranteed accident waiting to happen.
  • Fresh bagels, like The Bagel Bakery bagels, can last one or two days on the counter if they’re in a plastic bag, not a paper one. Keeping bagels in a paper bag will make them stale quickly.
  • If you’re bagel is a little hard, you can wrap it in a moist paper towel and pop it in the microwave for a couple seconds. The result is a warm, ready-to-eat bagel.
