How to Properly Store Bagels

Congratulations – you’ve purchased our Bag O’ Bagels, and you have 13 fresh bagels to enjoy. Our bagels are hard to resist, but occasionally there are some to spare. How do you keep these bagels in tip-top shape to be enjoyed later? Follow our advice:

It can be tempting to put the extra bagels in the fridge – stop! These will cause them to dry out quickly. Instead, we recommend storing the bagels in a plastic bag at room temperature. Be sure to squeeze as much air out of the bag as possible. This method can store bagels for up to five days. But, be careful. Putting warm bagels in a plastic bag can cause them to be soggy. Nobody likes a soggy bagel.

Another option is to freeze your bagels. This is a great option if you want to enjoy your Bag O’ Bagels at a slower pace, as they will keep for about 3-4 months in the freezer. To eat, simply pop the pre-sliced frozen bagel into the toaster – voila—you’ll have a quick, tasty breakfast.

Don’t let the fear of stale bagels prevent you from buying our bagels in bulk. With these easy tips, you can have a fresh-tasting Bagel Bakery Bagel anytime. Your taste buds will thank you.

Five Fun Facts About Bagels

We love bagels. And we bet you do, too. So, sink your teeth into these fun facts to learn even more about our favorite food.

  1. The earliest known mention of a bagel originates in Poland back in the early 1600s. However, it wasn’t until the 1960s until the bagel became popular in America.
  2. Due to its multi-step process, bagel production used to be a four-person job. In an assembly line, two men would shape the bagel dough, then a man boiled the bagels (the kettleman). Finally, the last man would be in charge of the oven.
  3. Americans sure do love bagels — nearly 61% of surveyed Americans reported to eat a bagel at least twice a week for their breakfast.
  4. The most popular bagel flavor is plain, while sesame takes second place.
  5. National Bagel Day is celebrated on Feb. 9. But, we think every day is bagel day. Who needs an excuse to eat a bagel?

Fresh Deli Sandwiches and Salads

Some may not know that we have fresh, tasty sandwiches and salads that are made-to-order every time. Choose from either one of our signature sandwiches, or build-your-own for both sandwiches and salads. Sandwiches can come on variety of breads, such as wraps, focaccia and, of course, bagels. Signature sandwiches range from the classic Caesar to the Cocky Curry Chicken wrap. If you want that same great taste, but without the carbs, turn it into a salad. There is bound to be a sandwich or salad to please every palate.

Egg Bagels

Why is it that bagels get singled out as solely a breakfast food? Our bagel sandwiches can make a delicious, satisfying lunch. The Eggl Bagel with meat includes scrambled egg, cheese and your choice of sausage, turkey sausage, ham, bacon or smoked turkey. That’s a protein-packed lunch. Or, try one of our focaccia egg sandwiches, served on our freshly baked sundried tomato focaccia bread. The delicious Spinach n’ Sausage includes almost all the major food groups: carbs, protein, veggies and dairy. What are you waiting for?

When your stomach starts rumbling at your next lunch break, choose the Bagel Bakery to fuel up. If you come for both breakfast and lunch, we won’t judge. There’s no such thing as too much Bagel Bakery. We look forward to seeing you.

What to do:

  3. Freeze the mold until the cream is solid. This should take about an hour.
  4. Mix the coffee, more cream and sugar in a glass measuring cup and stir until the sugar is dissolved. You will need about 2 1/4 cups total.
  5. Refrigerate until chilled.
  6. Pour the chilled coffee mixture into each mold and fill it to the top.
  7. Cover the top with foil, and insert the sticks.

How Green Bagels Are Made

We’re approaching that time of year where everyone and everything (including food and beverage) is decked out in green. Have you ever wondered what the full process of turning bagels green looks like? We’ll tell you:

You start mixing bagel dough in large mixer with green food coloring for ten minutes. Then, the dough should be rolled out by hand and then cut into strips. Begin cutting the dough before you place it on a tray and bake it for 10-15 minutes.

We’re not planning on green bagels at The Bagel Bakery this year, but we hope you’ll still join us this St. Patrick’s Day. Bagels, green or not, are great for soaking up the green beer you’ll be drinking later!

The Journey of a Rembrandt Coffee Bean

As many of you know Bagel Bakery Owner Ken Rembert is also the proud owner of his own line of coffee, Rembrandt Coffee. Rembrandt Coffee specializes in direct-trade, shade-grown coffee with a mission to maximize the quality of its coffee and the benefit to the people of Guatemala. Ken actually travels to Guatemala every year to visit some of the coffee farms, place water filters in some of the homes and help fit eyeglasses.

An average cup of Rembrandt coffee uses 70 roasted beans consisting of 35 coffee cherries. These cherries are hand picked from a tree on a mountain in Guatemala, placed in a plastic bucket, dumped into a sack and loaded onto a mule. The mule travels around two miles where the cherry is processed into a pulp, fermented overnight, sun dried for several days and processed in the city.

Finally, it is loaded onto a boat and travels 1,200 miles via water and interstate to The Bagel Bakery, where it is roasted, ground and brewed especially for you! Our Rembrandt Coffee is one of a kind, and we encourage everyone to give at least one of our blends a try.

If you’re a business owner and want to feature Rembrandt in your shop, give us a call! Ken is always looking for a great wholesale customer.

7 Reasons Why You Should Give Coffee A Try

There are two kinds of people in this world: the coffee drinkers and non-coffee drinkers. There are several reasons why some people choose not to indulge in the magical goodness that is caffeine, but most people don’t know a cup of Joe a day could keep the doctor away. Here are seven reasons why you should give coffee a try.

  1. It can help make you more intelligent

Coffee has caffeine in it, which is the most commonly consumed stimulant. Caffeine’s primary job is to block the effects of Adenosine, which in turn causes your brain to release neurotransmitters like Dopamine and Norepinephrine. Several controlled trials have shown that an increase in these neurotransmitters can improve mood, reaction time, cognitive function, memory and alertness.

  1. It can help you lose weight

We already mentioned how caffeine is a stimulant and can raise your metabolism and increase the oxidation of fatty acids. In addition to that, two separate meta-analyses show that caffeine can also increase exercise performance by about 12 percent.

  1. It can reduce your risk of Type II Diabetes

There have been several studies that have found an association between coffee and a lowered risk of diabetes. The reduction ranged anywhere from 23 percent all the way up to 67 percent. A large review article looked at 18 of these studies and found each additional cup of coffee per day lowered diabetes risk by 7 percent.

  1. You have less of a chance of getting Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s

Studies show that coffee drinkers are up to 60 percent less likely to contract Alzheimer’s, dementia and Parkinson’s.

  1. It can be good for your liver

Coffee can lower the risk of liver cancer by 40 percent and can reduce the risk of end stage liver damage by up to 80 percent.

  1. It can help you live longer…

… or at least reduce your risk of premature death. Two large studies have shown that coffee consumption is related to lower risk of premature death by all causes.

  1. It contains a lot of nutrients and antioxidants

We bet you didn’t know one cup of coffee contained Vitamin B5, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B1, Potassium and Manganese.

So think again if you think coffee is just black water! There are several health benefits associated with coffee consumption, which is why we love to drink it. Plus, our Rembrandt coffee is delicious.
