How to Add Some Nutrition to Your Bagel

Bagels get a bad reputation for their carbs, and rightfully so, but did you know there are different ways you can turn your carb-loaded breakfast into a healthy snack?

Whole grain bagels are extra fiber, which can help lower cholesterol and blood pressure. They also help redistribute fat in different parts of your body. You can use whole grain bagels as a base to add healthy toppings, and feel a little less guilty.

Instead of cream cheese, try a topping such as peanut butter so that you’re getting all the yummy protein instead of extra calories. If this doesn’t sound enticing, you can also try a spread like avocado. Avocado is filled with vitamins, potassium, fiber and healthy fats.

Finally, if you’re feeling adventurous, you could try lox. Lox is a smoked salmon, which is filled with protein and goes great with plain, low-fat cream cheese.

Nuts, veggies, fruits, there are so many ways to make your bagel a healthy, guilt-free snack or meal. What healthy combination will you try next?

There’s a Salad for Everyone

No matter what your diet regime is, salads are sure to meet your nutritional needs. With ingredients such as tomatoes, sweet peppers and the greens, you can’t go wrong with a leafy meal. The greens alone have the calcium, iron, potassium and B vitamins that you need for a balanced lunch or dinner.

At the Bagel Bakery, we offer create-your-own salads so that you can satisfy all your nutritional cravings. You can choose your own toppings and customize it however you please.

What’s the Key to the Best Bagel?

What could possibly be the key factor in getting the bagels that we serve just right? It’s our freshness, of course. Fresh flour, fresh water, fresh proofing, fresh baking and fresh seeds are just a few of the ingredients and ways that we ensure freshness in everything we make.

There is a longtime customer who comes into the Bagel Bakery frequently who thought our bagels came in frozen. We quickly proved her wrong and even let her have a tour of the kitchen. She was shocked at how complicated the process is every day, but we assured her it is all worth it when we see the smiles on everyone’s faces.

If you are having a less than amazing day, swing by the Bagel Bakery and hang out with us for a while. You can even watch the bagels mix and proof because we want to prove to everyone how fresh our bagels are.

What does your bagel say about you?

One of the best things about indulging in a breakfast filled with bagels is the endless flavor combinations that can be created by switching up your cream cheese or bagel. Do different bagels say different things about whoever is eating them?

  1. Plain bagel with plain cream cheese – This bagel is very simple, very organized. It’s safe to assume that this person likes to keep things consistent and doesn’t take too many risks. But hey, there’s nothing wrong with a classic!
  2. Cinnamon raisin bagel with salmon spread – This bagel is extremely unorganized. This person has trouble making up their mind and takes too many chances. They are probably the life of the party because of their care-free outlook and willingness to try new things.
  3. Everything bagel with hummus, cucumbers and sprouts – Chances are this person is super earthy and likes to maintain a healthy diet. They may be a little on the hipster side and may not make too many decisions. This person is probably very laid-back, but very opinionated.
  4. Plain bagel with cream cheese and jelly – If this person isn’t a child, they’re definitely a child at heart. This bagel is simple, but comforting and definitely one of the classics. This person is probably very optimistic and light-hearted.

The possibilities are endless! There are so many different types of people in this world, no wonder there are so many bagels to fit all of them.

The Best Kind of Cherries

Don’t we all love cherries? I’m not talking about the little, red fruit that hangs from a stem. I’m talking about the cherries that live on the inside of coffee beans that create delicious, flavorful cups of coffee.

An average cup of coffee uses 70 roasted beans consisting of 35 coffee cherries. These cherries are hand-picked from a tree on a mountain in Guatemala, placed in a plastic bucket, dumped into a sack and loaded onto a mule. From there, the mule travels miles to where the cherry is processed into a pulp, fermented overnight, sun dried for many days and processed in the city.

Once this process is complete, the delicious beans travel all the way to the Bagel Bakery and end up in your cup. Our coffee beans travel far and wide to create the perfect cup of joe to start your morning off right. Now, who doesn’t love cherries?

Focaccia? What’s a focaccia?

Well, aside from being the most mispronounced word at the Bagel Bakery, it is a type of flat, Italian bread filled with flavor. We offer our delicious focaccia in rosemary onion or sundried tomato for breakfast offerings or lunch sandwiches.

Indulge in this delectable, Italian treat and order a cheese roast beef or turkey bacon sandwich the next time you’re in. And if you want to show off your Italian to everyone you know, bring a friend with you.

Honey Walnut Cream Cheese

No one can resist the mouthwatering temptation of cream cheese. Why stick to the original flavors when you can make your own?

Honey walnut cream cheese is the perfect addition to any Bagel Bakery bagel, you’ll never want to go back to just the regular cream cheese.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 4 ounces cream cheese
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 3 tablespoons finely chopped walnuts
  • 1 Bagel Bakery bagel

You’ll want to combine the cream cheese, vanilla extract, cinnamon and honey in a small bowl. Then, you should beat the ingredients in the bowl with a hand-held electric mixer on medium speed until the cream cheese becomes light and fluffy. Next, you’ll mix your walnuts into the cream cheese with a spatula or spoon before spreading your creation on top of your favorite Bagel Bakery bagel!

Bagel Spotlight: Blueberry

Blueberry bagels are not only a delicious way to start your morning, or mid-day snack, they’re also a great way to put a smile on your face.

Did you know that a typical blueberry bagel contains 40 percent of your daily value for vitamin D? It also has 20 percent of your daily value for vitamin B6, B12 and niacin.  So, you can treat yourself to a bagel while still getting those amazing vitamins and minerals.

Blueberries are also filled with greatness themselves because they’re known for reducing belly fat, improving memory and fighting off illnesses.

With these awesome ingredients put together in a tasty treat, blueberry bagels might just be what you need to start your day.

Let’s Switch Things Up

It’s impossible not to love the classic bagel with cream cheese, but sometimes we need a little change. If you’re a bagel lover who’s looking to spice things up, try some of these delicious concoctions to keep things interesting.

  1. Bagel Pizza – We almost love pizza as much as we love bagels, so why not put the two together? Just take a plain bagel, or whichever bagel flavor you’d like, put some tomato sauce, cheese and whatever toppings you’d like on top. Stick it in the oven for a few minutes, and you’ve got yourself a bagel pizza!
  2. Breakfast Bagel – You can use your bagel as a bun to fill with eggs, bacon, cheese, or whatever you’d like. You can make it as a breakfast sandwich or cut up the bagel and make it a scramble! What a perfect way to start your morning.
  3. Dessert Bagel – Have you ever tried putting marshmallow fluff on a bagel? Give it a try with some cinnamon or Nutella, and you’ll understand why dessert bagels are all the rage.
  4. Salad bagels – Is that even possible? Of course it is. You can cut up your bagel and toss it in with your salad to soak up some of that dressing and add a little something extra to your leafy greens. They’re kind of like soft croutons, but if you’re a fan of the crunchy, you can always toast the bagel beforehand.
  5. Bagel Bread Pudding – Bagels are bread too, so they work perfectly for a bread pudding. You can whisk together eggs, milk, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg and pour it over a pan filled with bagel pieces. Just pop it in the oven for about 45 minutes, and you’ve got the best bagel bread pudding around.
